SIRFT is connected to an operational rail line at Tinsley off the Sheffield to Doncaster freight route (Woodburn Junction to Rotherham Central Junction). A triangular junction with the main line allows access to the North or South without requiring the train to run round. It delivers excellent access to the national rail network, with connections to mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel, principal ports and the rest of the UK.
Its recently modernised, dedicated sidings are operated by England Welsh Scottish Railways (EWS). A shunt loco, maintained by EWS, is on site at all times while rail activity includes daily steel shipments from the global leading Outokumpu steel plant, which is also connected to the sidings.
There’s further potential to install canopies over the rail sidings to enable sheltered loading and unloading.
A recent upgrade to this line has increased the “loading gauge” through bridges and tunnels of up to W10 gauge standard allowing taller containers to be carried on standard wagons.
